Sustainable Development

World Saving Businesses

Many people have accused the businesses or economics of the cause of global environmental crisis. Even so, in the business world and economic arena, the assumption that economics can perform as a tool for environmental solution while simultaneously facilitating economic growth and environmental protection is developed as found among the following innovations in business and financial sector.

Carbon Trading

1. Carbon Trading is a business in which the company or factory’s owner trades the carbon credits gained from GHG reduction with the countries or companies that emit carbon more than their permitted quotas as stipulated in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

Because the Kyoto Protocol obliges the high carbon emitting countries to reduce GHG, the “carbon credit trading” is specifically designed to assist those countries reaching their own carbon emission limits to avoid being punished. By contributing to GHG reduction of business in other countries, the carbon credits achieved will be transferred to the former party. This hence prevents the fee payment.

For instance, the country A is obliged to reduce 50 million tons of GHG and the violation of which can be charged for 3,000 baht per ton or approximately 60 billion baht. However, if the country A can mitigate only 30 million tons of GHG, it must purchase another 20 million tons of carbon credits from non-Annex 1 or countries without obligatory GHG mitigation.

The country A therefore contacts Inpang Learning Center in Kut Bak District, Sakon Nakhon Province where the villagers plant and protect 625 rai of community forest. The carbon dioxide stored in the woods can mitigate 75,000 tons of carbon. These reduced carbons are called “carbon credit”. The country A gains these extra 75,000-ton carbon credits in addition to its currently holding 30 million tons. On the other hand, the villagers who grow and protect forests can sell the carbon credits at the price of 4.25 US dollars per ton. In total, the community receives 37,000 US dollars or over 1 million baht.

Amidst the advantages of carbon credit trading, the sellout of carbon credits by non-Annex countries having no GHG reduction obligations will have an impact on their future commitments. In the case of new agreements determining that these countries must contribute to GHG reduction, they will not possess any remaining credits as a result of advanced trading. Furthermore, the generated income from the sellout may be many times lower than the fine.

Weather Index Crop Insurance

2. Weather Index Crop Insurance is an attempt by the economists to protect small-scale farmers from disaster risks such as floods and drought which are the results of global warming, unpredictable climate variability, including more frequent and severer natural catastrophe. The “weather index” is used to set insurance conditions, for instance the amount of rainfall, temperature, water level, etc

3. Social Enterprise Matching is the pairing of social entrepreneurs or non-profit organizations with the large businesses that wish to support social activities. Examples are the support of Muang Thai Life Assurance PCL in coral protection and other social enterprises matching with the New Haven Reef Conservation Program or the matching of Nan Mee Co., Ltd. with the Children Mind and Child Gallery in support of art therapy for the rehabilitation of marginalized youth.

Fair Trade

4. Fair Trade is the trading system fair to all relevant stakeholders from producers, distributors, consumers and labor force in the system. The goods production processes must be qualified, standardized, environmental-friendly, and fair. The price support ensures consumers can buy products at the appropriate price while the labor receive proper payment with good working environment indiscriminate of sex, skin color, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and age.

For instance, the Sam Roi Yoi Pineapple Agriculturist Cooperative in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand has promoted and encouraged local enterprise of fair-trade pineapple agriculturist cooperative to produce and develop pineapple production systems. Its fair-trade standards were certified by the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) from the Federal Republic of Germany and therefore the Cooperative can export canned pineapple products and juice to the markets in European Union.

Nonetheless, the economics and business alone cannot save the world. The causes of current global warming are not that qualified innovations, knowledge, management and technology in mitigating GHG emission are absent. It is linked to extensive behavioral change which requires a combination of diverse methods. Innovations beyond those R3 or the use of cloth bags are needed, along with the policy and legal amendments.
